Moving forward

Well I'm glad to announce this was great week! I learn a lot and I also manage to get a lot done!

First things first. The mini golf. I managed to develop the skills that I told Miss Amy at the beginning of this trimester that I will never do. I was able to work collaboratively with other, delegate and be completely calm about an event (my mom was scared as well of a few of my friends to see how calm I was!). Well for the mini golf I planned it with my mentor for the event, Jamie. We both worked together to plan along with Tim, the owner, to make this event, so I can't take the credit because without them this wouldn't have been possible. I was able to delegate because Tim and Kim where the ones who were at the entrance dealing with the money. The event worked pretty much on it's own, we just need the people to come. Also I let the yearbook club be incharge of how to raise money for is, because the funds of the mini golf were going to the Scholarship fund. Then someone suggested to ask Baulas for a percentage and we would tell people to go to Baulas before or after playing mini golf. Koral went and spoke with them and they agreed to give 5%. This week she will talk to them again to see the amount that would go for us and also to give them the information of the transfer. Also Selene and Koral where taking pictures and so was Camille. I was proud of my team for helping out, taking initiative and not having me on top of this. It's a slow process but every time I like my team more and more <3 nbsp="" p="">
It was raining unfortunately, but people still went. I was in tamarindo from 6-8pm and there were 3 big rounds of people going to play. There were students from pre-K with their parents to high school students with their parents (I did a round against my mom because my brother went of to play with his friends, and she ended up winning 71-92! )

CAS

Well I sent Mr. Abel and Miss Kerry and email with the information of my CAS project and asked them if they could send it in a separate email to all the parents to spread the word out because it will happen this coming Saturday. I also made some ads, I didn't like the background color as much but I wanted them to be simple and stand out that way people will want to read it. Also I will be printing some to put to the bulletin board! This time it will be in Season, next time will happen next trimester and I will make sure to plan everything during vacation that way I will come prepared in January and start planning big things like choosing a student, calculating how much money will be needed, look for a place to stay for the student before and after camp and look for plane tickets.

I'm really excited for Saturday, Seasons is delicious and my family is looking forward to go and I hope other La Paz families are as well!

Prodcutive week!

I'm soo excited! This week has gone really well!

I email the parents and they are ALL interested in helping! I choose Seasons to be the first place of the dinner next week because it's in Tamarindo I felt that it was a good place to start. I just need to coordinate a few last details with Shlomy so I can make the flyer next week and it can go as a separate email on Monday of next week.

I also need to come up with a catching name, I'm really bad at this, for the dinners. I will definitely will have many dinners next trimester. I feel really frustrated because I didn't do this before! The parents are soo nice and willing to help, I could have done at least 2 dinners already! Anyways I have to catch up quickly and get things done because I can only go forward now.

Tomorrow is the mini golf event and I'm really relax because it will be an event that I will not be leading, it will happen on itself and I will actually be able to enjoy it! My family and I have a bet of who will be the winner, my brother or me. Also I hope a lot of people go to Baulas so the yearbook gets some funds!

More details at the end of the week!

Catching up

Well I haven't really been focusing on CAS as much as I would like to but this week I'm catching up in all the thing that I have missed. I have realized that I need to organize my time better and I can't really help Tanya with the Beach socials because I have a lot going on. However I feel like the best way to get the fund that I need for my CAS project I need to have a large event that fundraises a lot of money in one day. That will require a lot of time, but I think that it is worth it. Before It seems like I don't do anything during this trimester, I will definitely plan a dinner in two weeks. I need to send out a couple of email asking the different restaurants to see how wants to help out.

From my original plan this is what I have done and not done:
October
21st-27th: This week was MUN so I did not have time to work on CAS

28th-3rd: I sent out an email to Mr. Abel asking for information of business from La Paz and he told me to use the La Paz directory from the Website. I was going to do the presentation in morning meeting but there was no time on day and on Thursday IB class went to UCR to do research for our EE. I felt a little lost this week because I knew I had many things to do and to start working on but I just felt overwhelmed and that stopped me from doing several things.
Also it was Halloween week and I wanted to have fun. I did volunteer hours during the Halloween event of the school. I had a face painting station with Natasha (a parent), it was really fun I like doing face painting but I felt that I was out of practice. It was good, the table was always full and I barely had the chance to eat, I liked it because most kids wanted me to draw simple things expect this girl who wanted a princess on her cheek, which ended up looking like a triangle with a crown... It was a different experience because I felt that this year many students from high school helped with the event rather than participate in it.

November:
4th-11th: This week I actually did a few things:

  • made flyer for mini golf event
  • filled out risk management for mini golf event (it was really hard)
  • contacted organizers and counselors from camp and they are all willing to help however they can.
  • re-did the powerpoint presentation for morning meeting
  • wrote the letter to send to restaurants * I will send the letters next week because the only restaurant that appears in the Directory is Seasons, but I know there are a lot more.
  • Told Tanya I couldn't help with Beach social because I had many things going on.
The letter goes like this:

Dear (insert name of contact/restuarant)

My name is Camila Arguedas and I'm currently a 11th grade IB student at La Paz. As part of the curriculum each student creates their own project based on their passion, for a class called CAS (creative, active, service). My project for this school year is to fundraise money to send at least one student from the 10th grade class to attend a week long camp in Pennsylvania at Allegheny College.

Last school year I was able to attend along with another student, Selene; we were able to learn about the importance of water qualities in ecosystems and we were lucky to bring back science equipment that we used in camp, for the school to have. We also establish connections with students from the college who are interested in coming to Costa Rica and work with the school.

The camp is way to establish connections and enrich the knowledge of the students. My goal is to create a scholarship fund for the students so that each year at least 1 or two students from La Paz attend the college. I want to fundraise money for my project a different way, more indirect.

My idea is to have every month or twice a month dinner nights in different restaurants owned by La Paz families, and create alliances with the restaurants that want to join. The idea of the dinner night is that it will be encourage to La Paz families to go to a specific restaurant on a chosen date and a small percentage of the proceeds will go to help the project. It will be a win win situation because the restaurants will be known more by La Paz families and funds will be collected for the project.

Don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested in helping or have any questions.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

List of restaurants that could help:
  • Seasons
  • Bamboo Sushi
  • Patagonia
  • Lola´s
  • The Green house (maybe)
  • Baulas (it's hard, put it's possible)
  • Azul
  • Falafel's (Idan's parents rest, I think that is the name)
  • Eat at Joe's Witches rock
It's a pretty good list, now my goal for next week is get all the emails and send the letter!

My Plan

So in order to move on we have to answer a few question in class, which are the following:

What is my project?
My project is to create a scholarship fund so that at least one students goes to Creek Camp each year. I want to create this scholarship fund because it's a very unique experience for students to go. Also it's a great opportunity for La Paz to create connections with a science camp because they have a lot of connections and are able to get us many different cool science equipment.

What are my goals?
I want students to like science and learn that science is really fun and if you have more equipment than what we have in school it can be really cool. Also people need to start seeing science as something more than just experiment, because in reality it's way much more than that.

What do I need to do in the next 3 months? List the items and assigned dates due.

October:
I feel like I have a lot going on during this month and that I won't be able do many things because next week I have two big things going on. On Thursday yearbook is having the first fundraiser and that same day I'm going to Model United Nations for 3 days. Also this week is the beach social, but I wasn't able to coordinate anything with Witches Rock because it was short notice and Holly, was really busy because she is going to be out of the country until December.

This week is the 14th-20th and I will brainstorm of ideas of how to create a scholarship fund. Speak with Jim and see how he and Creek Connections can help me with the project. I spoke with Edgar, Martin and Mr. Abel and the fund is all set. I just have to put the money under the name of "Creek Camp" and pass a copy of vouchers and deposit so we can both keep a control.

21st-27th. I don't think I will do anything related to CAS. Maybe do the presentation in Morning Meeting on Tuesday. I need to see if I will do it with Selene or not. I will try to do it with her if she is ready but if she is not then I will present on my own. Ask Mr. Abel for list of emails of parents with business from La Paz.

28th-3rd I will start planning the first fundraiser. Do a raffle or a dinner night. I will send emails to parents of La Paz and community members and see if they want to donate a price. At the same time email parents how own business and speak with the to see if they wanted to collaborate and one night encourage and invite La Paz families to go to that restaurant or business and consume. Then a percentage will go to the scholarship. Do background research on raffles.

November:

4th-10th: Coordinate with Tanya where the second beach social will be and also see if there are any business around that beach to ask for a percentage. Help Tanya advertise the event a lot! Also plan the yearbook first fundraiser along with Jamie. If possible and I get an answer from a parent, hopefully have the dinner night of Saturday the 9th. If not I will have to wait for Saturday 18th at the beach social. I need to finish and perfect the flyer for the Beach Social which will go to on the newsletter.

11th-17th: If I wasn't able to get the dinner night the week before I will plan it so it will happen next week. I will do any last minute planning with the beach social fundraising aspect and advertise it A LOT! Also I will be busy with any last minute planning for the yearbook planning. Make sure that my team is involved and motivated. See how things are to see if it its feasible to do a raffle or not. I need to see if I get a good price. And if it did turn out than have it the week before the last of school.

18th -24th:  Plan the dinner, send out flyers and put them around campus. Also if something showed up for a raffle sell tickets, put flyers about it and tell people about. Work on advertisement for both fundraisers. Maybe to the raffle at the dinner. Depends on how things turn out.

25th- 1st: Count money, reflect on what went wrong and what went well. Brainstorm ideas on new fundraisers. Choose a student. Research on plane tickets.

Research 2 projects similar to your and cite references. Summary of what you learned.

One project that is in school, is the scholarship fund for the students. I was a part of Student Sponsoring students in 7th grade and then then 9th-10th grade. I learned a lot from it. For example if you want to earn more money you need to have everything donate. Planning a month ahead is the best, the less last minute problems you will have. Also learned how to ask help and donations from people which is really important. Having only one person dealing with the money is important and also keep a control with the person incharge at school (Jennifer and Edgar). Advertisement is one of the most fundamental aspect because people need to know about the event in order for them to show up and be able to contribute.

I found this article on how to start a scholarship fund which was very interesting some of the important point where:

  • Donations for scholarships are not charities because they don't go under the "charitable class".
  • Donations are not "tax deductible".
  • They are done to honor a loved one or price a group of people.
  • Most scholarships are made through nonprofit organization or any other type of local organizations.
  • They are usually manged and controlled by a third party.
  • Then there was another link to a very complicated criteria which scared me off, but I realized that it was for college type scholarships. However my project is small so it was interesting to read, but I don't need to follow all those steps.

It's on!

I have decided that I will create a scholarship fund so that at least 1 students goes to Creek Camp starting this year. Also Selene is doing something similar related to Creek Connection, but she will be in charge of the science aspect and keep up with the equipment that Jim and Will will bring. And in order for that to happen I need to plan a lot! My first idea is already starting and it's developing. I emailed Tanya Rauzi, she is in charge of the Community Council from the school to know more about the Beach Social which will be happening next Saturday. This beach social will be in Tamarindo in front of Witches' Rock and I email Holly, a former La Paz parent to see if they could give us a percentage of the profit that are gained that day. Now I'm just waiting for their response. And for now I will be creating a small flyer for the event and if I get a response from Holly I will add that information.
On similar topic I will be creating a power point about creek camp and all the fun that I had. I wanted to do it along will Selene, but her topic is different it's the science aspect, I was too show the fun and unique aspects of science camp. So I will  create the power point and then see if Selene wants to add anything to it. I want to do the presentation soon so people can have an idea of what creek camp is like and they will like to go.
Also Jim will be here this week and hopefully I will see him and I will coordinate with him the project and tell him my ideas.

CAS HOMEWORK:
Goals:
  • Create a connection with Creek Camp by sending a student to the camp each year.
  • Fundraise about 2,500 dollars for the student to go. The camp is $500 and the other money would be for plane ticket and depending when the ticket is bought it might be less, hopefully.
  • Give the scholarship to a top student from the 10th grade
Grantt Chart:
  1. October:
  • Meet up with Jim
  • Think of ways to fundraise
  • First fundraiser?
  • Presentation about camp
  1. November:
  • Speak with the treasure of the school to make sure a fund in the school for the scholarship. Nobody will touch this money. Also do the same thing for yearbook and make sure that the money that was left from last year is still under the yearbook fund. I want to make sure about this because there was a money disappearance in the music club.
  • Do second fundraiser a raffle
  • Speak will Miss Kellie and have candidates for the scholarship
  • Start planing a larger event for the second trimester a dinner, casino night, etc.
  1. December:
  • finish the last details of the big event
  1. January:
  • I will see how I'm doing on December and plan the rest. I need to plan more fundraiser, but the tickets and find a student who might be interested in doing the project for next year.
ON ANOTHER TOPIC!
THE YEARBOOK!!!
I wanted to talk a little bit about the yearbook because I have been experiencing many of the 8 learning outcomes and at the same time learning a lot.
So far it's going really great! I  have a good team and last week I have learn how to show that I was incharge. I didn't want this to happened but they left me no choice. My ideas was that yearbook club would be similar to Student Government, everyone listens and gives ideas in a friendly way and Andrea and I don't have to act like we have more power than everyone else because everyone contributes. However in yearbook we have a lot more people and they get distracted a lot. On Wednesday Camille brought books from her old school, which I approved because I tell everyone that they can bring yearbook to share ideas. But there were a few students who were being really distracted by the yearbooks and were being rude because they weren't pay attention to the planning that was being made, so I called their attention once. Then it happened again so I raised my voice and told them to put the book away, but they didn't. Then they were being loud and not contributing so I raised my voice a little more and told them to pay attention and put the books away now and to contribute and be respectful other ways they could leave. I said the last part very calm and relax and this worked because it should to them that I had more authority and that they had to be respectful, however I felt really bad because I felt that I was being a Miss Kenia. She was be a very good teacher but when you are being rude, you will see her bad side and I have the same thing, I'm very nice and calm but I hate it when people are being rude and I have a really strong attitude. I guess that I don't like to raise my voice and bring out my string attitude because I don't want it to be that way. I like to lead and have people respect me, but I have learned that I need to show everyone that I'm in charge and then when and not "loosen the leash" if I want everyone to do their work and behave. Also I'm just like most of them, maybe a year older than them and I don't want them to be like uhg she is so bossy, but after reflecting with Andrea about the last meeting I have come with the conclusion that I need to show my strong leader attitude to get a contribution from everyone and then as the year goes on and I see how they contribute I "loosen the leash" and hopefully it will become similar to the Student Government meetings.

Other fun facts about yearbook:
  • Nils loved the idea of doing the cover and he will work on it this weekend
  • The first fundraiser will be on Oct. 24th at the coffee house. The yearbook and music club will be together and will divide the profit.  I'm excited and nervous because I won't be there and I'm letting the club step up and do it on their own!
  • In November Nils will be working with a parent that knows about graphic design to do the cover!
  • The yearbook will cost about $5,360!!!!
  • More and More students are wanting to join and help with yearbook! :)
That is all for now! More updates along the week!

I'm back!!!

Well it's a new school year already! Time flys when you are busy!
I apologize for not writing in the blog during summer, but I didn't do any volunteer work as  I intended to, I just worked as a chaperon instead.
But now it's time to start volunteering again and I really need to get ideas straight for this year in order to finish of strong.
Last Monday Miss Amy took us on a hiking trip. It was a good time to spend time with my classmates and reflect. Part of the activities was that everyone had to get a piece of paper and each paper had a different jobs/ activity that one had to do throughout the entire hike. My was caregiver (or something like that) and my job was to make sure that everyone was doing okay through the hike, make sure that everyone had water and so on. I honestly think that I didn't do that bad, but I could have been better. At first I was just listening and checking on people's water bottle to make sure that they had enough water. Then about halfway through the hike a avalanche of thoughts came into my head regarding CAS, and then I was tired as well as my classmates so I stopped checking on everyone elses I tried to figure out my thoughts.
This year for CAS I have two option. The easy way or the more complex way and honestly I want to do both but I know that I won't have the time. The first option is to continue with Vianney's mom, Marie-Celie, and the Instituto de Oceanología. I really enjoy working with the Instituto because everyone in the group is very pro active, generous and with thousands of ideas to develop. The project in which I would be helping them are the trails, which the Instituto started during the summer and I had helped at the beginning with the development of the idea. I refer to this as the "easy" because it is a project that is already set, I would just go on Saturday to help the Instituto to make the signs, clean out the trails, etc. In the other hand my other project that I have in  mind is a lot more elaborated.
Last school year in the last week of school I had the amazing opportunity of going to Creek Camp in Pennsylvania along with Selene. It was a memorable experience for me because science is my passion at the same time I got to travel, visit a college and meet new people. Selene and I were lucky to go because normally the founder sponsors two students from another school in Costa Rica, Green Valley in Atenas and they weren't able to go. How Jim found us is a long and complicated story, but I'm very grateful for it. Now I'm not sure if he will still be able to sponsor more students because he is now retiring at the end of this year and is working on his own project. And after my experience at camp I really want La Paz students to continue going to Creek Camp and make connections. So my idea was to collect enough founds for at least one La Paz students, maybe two to go to the Camp and make it an annual event/price for an outstanding science student in 10th grade.
I will only have  a few months, the camp is in July, meaning I will have about 8 months to found raise. The camp is a week long and not expensive, it's only a $500,  but the plane tickets are the ones that are expensive.I have a few ideas like having and even like the Dart for art to found raise the money. My other idea was to ask parents from the school that own restaurant to give a percentage to the found, I would announce it to the community that way more people will go and have a larger profit. Then at the end I would set a plan so another student can take over it as their CAS project next year.
I'm really interested in both project but I just can't decide which one I really want to do. I have a feeling that I will go the more complex way a start found raising, but for now I will keep reflecting and deciding which one I truly want to do.

Talent, Ocean, Golf and Art!

Many fun Activities happening this week! Below is a description of each day and what I have been doing in for CAS and other activities :)

Monday June 3rd: No School
At 3pm there was a meeting about the new project the Ido (Instituto de Oceanografía) is doing. It's a really nice project, the goal is to have trial, which would be for free and be just like the ones that are in national parks all around Costa Rica. Also a unique aspect is that each trial will hopefully have a team that will design it and create a theme for it. I'm thinking in basing mine having a reflection trial, in a peaceful place and have quotes instead of information boards that will make people think and reflect about their life.
In the meeting we plan what we would do this week in order to have everything read for the event on Saturday. We discussed and planned for about 2 hours and Liam and I will work on the poster and I also had to create the how can you help sheet. I will post more about it next week and how it went.

Tuesday June 4h:
I went to the North Campus and planned a few aspects of the Talent Show with Miss Sara. I really like that we have an adult helping because a lot of the times this year we had to do many Student Sponsoring Students event just between the students. The good thing is that I feel like I don't have to do many things and there are also a lot of parents how are interested in helping. I'm really excited to work with Miss Sara, the parents and the students to have the talent show ready for the end of the month! 22 day until the talent show!

Wednesday June 5th:
I choreographed some of my dance with help of Miss Kerry and I will perform it at the Talent show :) Then I was at the gymnastics go away party :( I will miss Patti Jo but I'm looking forward to having classes with Leeah.

Thursday June 6th:
I will be getting things ready for the golf tournament in which the Student Government will be participating.

Friday June 7th:
Talent Show auditions @ north campus from 3pm-4pm!

Saturday June 8th: MANY FUN EVENTS! I love being busy and helping people out :)
Golf Tournament: 8am-2pm
Ido presentation in Potrero: 3pm
Dart of the Art (student Ambassador): 5pm

Below are some pictures of the activity that I took during my busy week!

Going everywhere with CAS

I got a lot to share, lot of fun news and activities! But first the Blue aspect of my news!

On June 8th is Ocean day! Yay! There is a day to celebrate the beautiful ocean that I love! :) Well that day I will be going to El Salón Comunal de Potrero to give a small presentation to a few people in Potrero about the new project that Instituto de Oceanología has. The project consists on creating nature paths/trial along Potrero and Brasilito (to start, maybe later it will be more). There are already a few trials but they are not clean, the idea it have them with signs that say information about the trees or plants and also have maps around the community with the trials. Another aspects is that the goal is to have a trial that will connect Brasilito and Potrero for tourist or anybody who wants to walk. I think this is an amazing idea because there isn't many activities to do and this will be great and will help a lot our community. At the same time our community had some trails but you have to be a local to know and many times they are trespassing private properties and they have no signs which makes it hard for someone who doesn't know the trail really well and they could get lost. If everything goes well José, Selene, Vianney, Marie and I will get together at Marie's and Vianney house to talk more about it and create the presentation.

On the same day I will be at the golf tournament of the Guardians of La Paz Weekend at Reserva Conchal. My Political Party will have a hole, #3 and we will be selling drinks and representing La Paz. Also we have decided that we will donate some of the money that we get to the music group. And the rest of the money will be done to get trash cans for the showers at the South campus which are necessary. The event starts at 8:00 am and I'm not sure at what time we will be there but it will be early. We will be there until 1-2:00 pm with our school uniforms and brochures and propaganda of the school as representatives.

Unfortunately the golf tournament and the ocean day is the same day, which mean I won't be able to be part of the beginning of the activities which is a beach clean up at Playa Potrero.

My class will go to a field trip to Earth University in about a week and a half. It will be really fun and I know it will be a great experience. We are fundraising and it's really frustrating because I feel like I'm bossing everyone around, which is true and yes I like to and yes it's necessary. But at the same time I wish someone else would take the lead in this kind of thing because I don't always want to be the mean guy even though it's fun because I control people and sometimes it's necessary, but I just wished I could lay back and let somebody else do it because I feel I'm always doing it. I know that in other occasions I have said that I won't wait until someone else does something when I can do it, but when I'm always do it, it gets tiring. I'm really looking forward to summer because I will be able to rest, after I work for two week with my parents. And during that time I won't be having to worry about organizing events, worry about school work, after school activities, fundraisers or student government. It will be long days were I will rest, read books at the beach and watch the list of movies that I have accumulated over the past school year that I wasn't able to see. Anyhow back to fundraising, tomorrow is our second fundraiser and it will be chaotic at first like always (that is just the way thing in life go, will events that I have organized) and then it will all be perfect and we will raise a lot of money!

Then for the next few weeks I will be planning the Talent show! It will be a challenge because normal it's both Bianca and I, however she won't be here and I will have to do more work. However there is a few students who go to the meeting and are great helpers (they are mostly guys). I know I will have help from Jack, Yoann, Yaritza,  Seba, Swan and maybe Delaney. Also I know there will be more students helping, I just need to get the other details together between this and next week. Miss Sara is the teacher who is supervising the event I think and below are some questions that she asked and that I answered her back on.

Well that is just a short overview of my next few weeks! There is a lot going on and many things to do! Also I have decide to title my blog going everywhere with CAS because I realized thanks to Miss Amy that Student Sponsoring students is also community work, but more focused in my school community and I should also write about it.

Class Activity Reflection

Below are some reflections in which we have been working in class. They are related with our 8 learning outcomes from CAS Class. I decide to reflect mostly on my last CAS project which was Blue Revolution.

Did I ever give up? Why? How did I overcome and move forward?

Yes. It's something that I'm not proud of, however I did it for my own good. I gave up on Blue Revolution, after the forum I tried to keep in working but things just didn't work out. If things don't work out then I should try to do it until they work, well that is what I usually tell myself. However I had so many ideas, but barely any support and I just couldn't do it on my own. I felt like I needed a team, just like it was at the beginning  even though I don't like to work with teams, I like the Blue Revolution crew. The problem was that we all had a lot going on and I was the only one coordinating things. I know that one of things that La Paz wants and this class, is that the students take lead and do projects on their own. But I couldn't, a person can handle only a certain amount of things and if I did Blue Revolution on my own I would have broken that limit and then I wouldn't have gotten things done the way I wanted. However I have learned from giving up what my limits are and what I can actually accomplish on my own. Overall I don't see it as a failure, I see it as a bump in the road, it was just an obstacle with a lesson and now I have to move on and focus more on CAS.

What feedback did I receive about my activity?

I was very excited to do Blue Revolution, specially the talk because I thought that it would be a great opportunity to teach the community about the ocean and the importance of saving it. However I was very disappointed and sad about the turn out because after planning it for 6 weeks I didn't hear the feedback that I wanted to hear. Why? Because it just didn't go the way that any of us planned. We had planned something interesting and we knew that it could not be long because people get bored very easily. And that was what happened. We had to rely on the presentation of Enrique and we thought that it would be precise and easy for people to understand, but the presentation was more directed towards a community of scientists not normal community members that only know the basics of the situations that are happening with the protection of the ocean. I'm a person that gets really interested in it but I was bored, I wanted it to finish. I wanted to do something to stop the presentation because it was not what we wanted  When I looked at the public it was as if a storm had burst into a beautiful sunny day, the public was the storm in the sunny day because I was happy and excited and then I saw them yawning, looking to the side or talking with people beside them and I felt disappointed. And the main feedback that I got from everybody was that it was too long and boring  And I learned that what Blue Revolution did was not the way you go towards people. Things need to be short precise and with just the right amount of info, not too little or too much. That is the way you get people, with posters, ads, commercial or events that get there attention an are interesting  This is something really important that I learned and I will take into consideration next time I do or am  involved in an activity like these one.

What connections did I find in the areas outside of guanacaste? How can my project be important to the world?

My project is important to the world because I'm dealing with issues of global importance. The ocean is part of the world and its receiving a lot of damages from people who are very ignorant and don't care about anything other than themselves  With Blue Revolution our goal was to inform people about t overfishing and the impacts of it. I have always been into this subject since I can remember. The main behind it is because I have lived near the ocean since I was 3 and I have learned to appreciate it, love it and protect it. At the same time I grew up with father who loves fishing in his free time and m brother hr learned who is just to like him. When I was younger we would do family trips (in other words to places where they could fish) while the men fished I would admire the beauty around me, take pictures and read. The there was a point in where my brother at the age of 8 become very good at catching fish, when my father wouldn't catch any. Sam would catch small and medium size fish because they would fish near the rocks and the shore, where the younger fish live. At the same time I started to release the fish that he would catch because I wanted to give a chance to the fish so they would have a life, become an adult and have baby fish. However that would get me in trouble because they were my brother's fish and "I had no right to decide their fate because I didn't catch them" according to both my father and brother. Until today I still have arguments and fights with them because they don't release the small fish and people like them are the ones who are ruining the ocean. After about 7 years of arguing with them I have made a small change, now they release the small fish but not the medium size ones It has been a long way, and they are my inspiration and my battle to keep fighting for the ocean and it's beautiful creatures.

How did it feel to work with others?

I dislike collaborating with others because then I have to depend on other people and if they don't get their work done I'm stuck, because I can't keep doing the work. This is mostly within school and projects, but I also don't like working with other people outside of school if they are hard to deal with (won't do their part, are annoying and distracting, aren't responsible, don't know what to do). The reason why I feel this way is because most of the time I end up doing all of the work and then people think can rely on ey and expect me to do all of it on my own!  I know I'm responsible and can do a lot but I'm not Wonder Woman I can only handle so much. And I'm tired of people expecting a lot of me because then I feel like I don't do enough even if I drained all there was of me. I know and I'm aware that working in a group is a very important skill to have in life but I can't work with people that are not willing to work as well because then it all depends on me. However I have been working on working with others and I have realized that communication is very important with both teachers and classmates (or co worker). Things won't always be the way that one expects it to be, and there will always be people who won't cooperate, but I just need to learn how to deal with it and put effort from my part as much as I can.

Long CAS day

Today I woke up at 7am to go to a beach clean up in Brasilito. Now I'm tired and I just want to sleep. I think I drained all my energy today with CAS. So the beach clean up it was very interesting I learned many things about my town that I didn't know before. The interesting thing is that it had nothing to do with beach cleaning. Then when I came I rested and worked on the yearbook until a few minutes ago and I think I had enough CAS for a week.

So the Beach clean up was very nice. The meeting point was at café el manglar, when I got there I was very nervous because I didn't know anybody. Then I met the owners of the place, some townspeople  and other people that came with Marie to help out. The place was simple, but it had its own beauty. The tables and chairs where shiny as one of the men was polishing them with wood cleaner. It was small but welcoming and all the people there had a loving attitude. I was there before Marie and had a chance to know other people and they had the opportunity to meet me. But there was one lady I which I was with more. Her name was Yesenia. She told me that she really likes helping out the Brasilito town even if it's not her hometown, also she was in almost every committee from the town. It was a hard working morning and I have to admit that I was not ready for it because I got tired way to fast. We started like at 8:30am and finished like at11:40ish 3 hours picking up garbage is tiring!!! At around 10 I could only drag the garbage bag, but when I saw that older community members were working harder than I was I realized that I had no excuse to be tired.
The places that were the most dirty were near the houses, which surprised me because I would think that people would clean their e backyards (the beach) but no, it's all dirty! And there was very disturbing things that I found in the beach that I rather not mention. I was happy to make the town look pretty but also get to know another perspective of the town.
There are many different types of people in a town. No there are three people of people in my town, the ones who care and don't to anything, the ones who don't care and don't do anything about anything and the ones who want a change and make a change. I say this from my experience today, I'm not trying to be closed minded and categorize everybody in three groups, but like I said I'm saying this from what I learned today. This beach clean up was open to the community and only the family and friends of the people who were organizing it came and a few other towns people who are in some committees and want the town to look better. Something that really surprised me is that we passed by a lot of people and they just stared and didn't help. Yesenia ask one guy that he know why he wasn't helping out and he said that he was busy but he was just busy watching tv in his yard and he was still there when we came back. And then I asked myself doesn't he care about his community? But I'm nobody to judge that guy. Later that morning Yesenia and an older men of the community where talking about all the incredible plans that the committees had for the town but there were two problems: most of the town doesn't collaborate and second the plans would not get approved by the government. And I tell myself that its so selfish of the government because they won't pay anything to help the town in the first place and when the town is doing things on there own with donations and volunteer work the government doesn't support them. This reminds me of a conversation I had with Mr. Abel the other day, of what could I do to help the world. I see that the only way to help is to become part of the government of a big company and try to bring some sense to them to help out people and to stop being so selfish. I wish I was a person with power to help out the Brasilito community become pretty and successful. And there was something that really pissed me off. In Costa Rica the voting starts this month, for the districts and the smaller parts of government like mayors and all that stuff (I'm not really into politics because its very corrupted and superficial). Anyways these three guys of the government came to "support" the event today. At first my reaction was like okay that's cool they are interested in small communities, this is good.

And then I heard one of the older women complains and Yesenia told her to please behave around them and not complain. I was interested by her reaction. The younger one of them was around 20 maybe, no more then 25 and he was part of youth politics and that tomorrow people where voting. He didn't tell me much a out it just that they wanted to focus of teenager and making them good people for society for when they become adults. So what I understood was that the goal of the youth politics was to help teengers because they would accept help from. People their age other then adults. The youth politics is from the ages 18-35 years old. But after talking more I realized that the group is to prepare mini corrupted politics since they are 18 to have a controlled government. Or we'll at last that is how I see it because this guy (the youngest one) was most of the time on this phone sending emails and making calls to organize everything for the voting tomorrow and how he was going to all the forgotten little towns to make propaganda. The oldest man that came was nice, but he was a little robot, what I mean is that he had the politic talk and the voice of a policy form the capital and how he would defend the government when the towns people would mention how their projects wouldn't get approved. Overall it was nice that they came to support but I just didn't like their intentions.
Sow now my feet hurt of walking! Oh and what made my day was that we saw a few whales on the Beach right before we started the Beach clean up. I was just so amazing! I hadn't seen whales or dolphins out in the ocean in two years and I go to the ocean really often.

Then when I came home and after resting and doing my homework I work in the yearbook which takes a long of time and fries my brain because there are just all many things to get done in so little time!!! It's scary, but I just need to collect some more pictures and I will be done! So close yet so far! I will stop working on the yearbook for this week before I get tired of it.

Oh and I need to take some time to write to Pascal and see if we are doing something for the forum of the leather trust turtle thingy that is happening next Saturday. Wow I just realized its a week away meaning I need to contact him after this...´

Picture of the beach clean up!!!

Well that is all for now! Cool projects happening soon! :)

I'm Back

Well it has been a long time since I last wrote on my blog because I haven't been working on my CAS project as much as I should be. However I have been thinking about it A LOT! After write like 3 different drafts about what I'm going to do with CAS for the reminding of the school year, however I didn't like how any of them sounded. So I waiting until I had inspiration to write.

My goals in this class are:

1. Make a change in my community.
2. Relate it back to the ocean/animals.
3. Have fun with it and don't stress out about it!

Now I need to put these together.

So during spring vacation there where 3 beach clean put in Potrero, which I had intended in going, unfortunately I got sick and was out of town. However I'm better now and with new energy to get in action. SO just like I have done many drafts during break for a post, I have also done a couple of drafts letters to send to Vianney's mom to see if I could help with Oceanography program in Costa Rica. So after I finish with this post I will give a final look at the letter and send it. <- a="" also="" and="" be="" brand="" cas="" continue="" doesn="" i="" if="" in="" lue="" making="" my="" nbsp="" new="" next="" of="" on="" out.="" p="" point="" power="" project="" revolution="" should="" step="" t="" terms="" that="" the="" turn="" with="" work="" would="">
This is shorter than I thought, but at least it's concise and to the point.

   Wish me luck!

2/3 done!

Well this is the end of the trimester and we did a small reflect on our project for CAS class, so here it is. I hope that however is readying this enjoys it! And I will promise that I will work more on Blue Revolution next trimester.

What do you feel has been your greatest accomplishment that relates to CAS this trimester?  Explain.

My greatest accomplishment in CAS has been that I learn how to accept failure and move on. I had a lot planed out for Blue Revolution and I thought that all of it would work out but none of it did. I did one small presentation to the 6th graders and only the kids who liked the ocean liked the presentation. Also I tried to fix the power point but the information on the power point that FECOP gave use was boring and too detailed. I think that the presentation was design for very informed fishermen and scientist because it involved a lot of numbers and graphics.
Another thing that I realized was that I was going too fast. I should have done more presentations instead of giving up so fast and also given more time to the project. Now I learn what my mistakes are I have to fix them and make something out of Blue Revolution.

What other service projects, outside of your CAS project, have you participated in, how many hours did you invest in them, and what did you gain from the experience?

I did two more projects aside from my personal CAS project. The first was helping Dominic selling food during the Basketball tournament for 3 hours. I learned a lot from his project because he was organized, a lot of people showed up and they also enjoyed it. He was organized because he had specific certificates printed out and special tickets that he gave to all the players. I also admire how many people showed up. I know that if I do an event is that the first thing to do is advertise so the entire community knows about.
The second project that I did was organize a movie night for the younger students to raise money for the music equipment for the school. We had planned this for two weeks and we had everything ready. However we didn’t know that the sound in my computer didn’t work and we weren’t able to put the movie, it took us one hour to get everything working. Also I wasn’t able to help set the thing up and have a backup plan because I was sick and I had to go to the doctor and came 30 minutes after it started. However I took over the set up of the movie and tried to put it on. It was a good experience to learn from. Next time I shouldn’t be sick and also check the systems to see if they work! At the end I did 2 hours with this movie night.

What has been the hardest obstacle to overcome during this trimester in relation to CAS?  Explain and give 2 ideas of how to overcome those obstacles next trimester.

The hardest obstacle to me to overcome during this trimester was realized that I had to stop and rethink everything. For most part of the trimester I thought that my project was going well and I just moved forward. But I just simply had to go and do a presentation and see if that was working or not. In order to overcome this obstacle I have to think on an interactive idea that will make Blue Revolution fun and interesting for anybody who hears about it. Also I should speak with other community members to see what their projects are and if they have any ideas that could relate to mine and combine forces and make something even better. Another idea that I have is to get involved with the costarrican institute of oceanography and have them be part of Blue revolution and have the scientist as special guest at the possible forums that will be done in the future.

Where is this going???

The first time I heard about blue revolution it wasn’t even called blue revolution. It was a Monday night, I was sitting in the brown love seat in the leaving from. It was half way through October, half way through the first trimester. The room was quite except the tv that was on,Monday from 8-9pm my mom and I always Grey’s Anatomy. It’s the last day of a long weekend and I’m fully rested but wished the long weekend would last longer.During commercialsI’m concentrated in my computer. In facebook my class mates are checking if there was any homework, on skype I’m chatting with Seba and my emails have my weekly updates from youtube and facebook, but there is another email, one from Mr. Abel. The subject of the email says MARINE CONSERVATION MEETING. I open the email and start reading it as the show comes back on. It talks about a marine conversation forum in the community in the end of November and they are looking for students how would like to volunteer and help out with the event. And that catches my attention. For my CAS project I wanted to do something with marine biology but I ended up helping with the Bingo instead. This was a great opportunity, it would be extra volunteer work, plus I still have to complete 150 hours of community work, a little extra volunteer work wouldn’t hurt. Excitedly I tell my mom about the email when the next commercials come on and she says it’s a great idea, but she asks when the meetings are happening. I skim through the email find where it says: Tuesdays at la paz south from 3:15 to 4pm. It’s right before  dance... I tell my mom and how I want to go but I don’t want to miss my dance classes. She says that If I change quickly she can pick me up 3:50 and take me to my dance classes. It will work out.
In the first meeting we were all sitting around the glass table in the office. We were all there, Miss Sarah,Mr. Abel, Pascal, Richard, Micah, Caleb, Dominic and Bianca. We were all very different, from different places and culture but we had something in common we love the ocean. That  first meeting something kindle inside of me, that hasn’t been lighted in a long time. I felt like a was a little girl again, waiting for everyone to wake up on Christmas morning so I could go open up my presents. I felt this satisfaction and excitement, this is what I wanted I told myself. This is what I was looking for, I would gain a lot of experience  and meet the director from FECOPT! This was perfect! This would also look amazing in  a college resume. I wouldn’t stop proposing ideas, I was available for anything! I would make this happen, it would be unforgettable. When the meeting was over Mr. Abel came up to me as my mom’s car got into the parking lot. And he says,”I’m glad that you came today, I could see the way your eyes shined throughout the entire meeting.” Yeah I was glad of also. As the weeks passed by I was punctual, I won’t miss a meeting and also participate in which ever way I could. I remember we we came up with the  motto, “we are always thinking green, lets start thinking BLUE!” and then coming with the name: Blue Revolution, we were going to teach people to think blue and save the oceans.
When the day of the presentation comes, I have butterflies in my stomach, I’m soo excited. I’m going to meet Don Enrique! This is the start of something big I told myself, this is the start of a revolution.  I go up to the stage with the crew, we are all excited, this is big, there are a lot of people, we can make a difference, we can make a change. As we go down to the stage and sit by the others and listen to the presentation, twenty minutes later the presentation goes on and on and on and it's still not done. I keep checking my clock and the presentation is taking longer than it should. I'm getting boring and as I see the audience and try to look for my friends, disappointment comes into me when I see there are not there, minutes later I see them come in the audience again with food in their hand. Lucky, I love the presentation but I wished I could get out for a little bit and eat like they did, I don't blame them for going away from the presentation. When it's finally done I hear both positive and negative feedback, but all I know is that I will never do a presentation as long and boring as that.
Four months later I'm here not liking the concept any more. I'm the complete opposite to the day in which I went into that meeting and my eyes shined like bright little stars. I don't have that enthusiasm any more. I don't even know where this project is going on, I used to love it, and now it just feels like an obligation, a boring project that I don't even know what the purpose if it is. I feel like I'm not creating a change the way I wanted. If feels like I'm just talking to people that don't care what I'm taking about. I'm like going into a sports meeting where everyone is expecting to hear about sports and I start talking about flowers, they  don't care about flowers try care about is sports. I'm giving the presenting to teenagers now day teens don't care about anything other than themselves and how to be cool to fit in. I want to find a better purpose with blue revolution or just find something else to do with it because right now it's not going anywhere and ever if I went to high schools around the areas talking about responsible fishing I would feel like I'm wasting my time if nobody cares about it. I need a project where I'm constantly working and facing challenges, that's the way I like things. I'll try to figure something out, because if I really want to make a change then I need to start moving.

First Meeting!

Today will be the first Blue Revolution Meeting of the year! I'm excited but worried about the turn out...
^^^
That was me on Tuesday morning.
Well it turned out that it was only my mentor Pascal and I. Richard couldn't come and Miss Sarah and her Country Day representatives didn't show up either, even though they said they wanted to come and where talking about different events in which Blue Revolution can become a part of. Anyhow Pascal and I revised the power point presentation Enrique (Director from FECOP) gave us and shorten it. That way when we give out the presentation it's very precise and entertaining, however we I still need to take out some slides and modify others.
The stickers, well that is a matter in which we will have to stop and consider. Pascal and I talked about the steps to create the stickers and the prices and he suggested to ask with FECOP and see if they graphic design artist could digitize my designs and also print with the company in which FECOP prints. However I´m in the process of writing the email to send to them with the proposal. In the other hand Pascal said that the girl from Mr. Tom in Tamarindo could do the artwork into digital for free if we printed with her, but we are not sure and he will go talk to her about it. That way we have several options and choose the best one to create the stickers.
The next step is to fix the power point and get into with CEPIA and coordinate a date to go to the Colegio in Villareal or Cartagena. Then CEPIA would speak with the directors and see which time works best for them and for me. Also Pascal said he would like to attend to the first ones to give suggestions and then let me do them on my own. Mean while these are the things that I need to think about in order to make the presentation happen:
  • establish a date (soon!) There are only 3 more weeks left of this trimester and the I go to vacation and the third trimester will go by even faster than this one.
  • Fix the Power Point Presentation
  • Have a list of materials that I will need for the presentation
  • Ask who will come with me from Blue Revolution, do another meeting next week maybe and see who comes?
  • Get the sticker done before the presentation? Sell them to the people after the presentation.
Overall the meeting went by fast and we also discussed about asking FECOP if there was generic name for the big fish such as (sail fish, sword fish, marlin, etc.) that way the NO MARLIN ON MENU sticker has the generic name instead of marlin because the other species of fish are also endangered. And ask FECOP to give us sticker to give out to the restaurants around the area. But before that do a presentation about responsible restaurants in a local restaurant and invite other restaurants and explain the NO MARLIN ON MENU idea and see which of them decide to join with the idea.
Well that was it. I hope I get some more action with this project because lately it has been feeling kind of boring. One of my other goals is to defined better what Blue Revolution is and it's goals.
I'll be working on the about me section so look it soon!

The Stickers

Well good news!!!
I went with Jake (unfortunately Pascal couldn't come with us) to Grafika last Thursday to learn more about the process of making stickers. The good news is that it is possible, the not so good news is that I haven't heard from them yet, but I just need to be patient. I learned that the first time making stickers is more expensive because there are some cost to cover such as making the art into digital art and a custom shape for the sticker, other than that we have a good deal to make the stickers. That is all good news, but I haven't heard from Pascal yet or Grafika about the formal quote. Once I hear from both of them I can make a final decision. I'm giving them a week, if I don't hear from them by Thursday I will contact them.

Another thing I want to do is get the Blue Revolution Crew together again. I'm planning in sending an email to everybody soon so we can hopefully meet next Tuesday like before. But before that Pascal and I need to discuss the shorter version of the power point that we will hopefully present at the end of March (with the crew) to the Villareal or Cartagena Colegio with CEPIA.

Many exciting things for the next coming month! Hopefully everything will flow smoothly! :)
Next entire will hopefully be about the meeting with the crew, yay!

P.s. I will try to say hopefully less time on my next entire :)

Weekly update

I'm really excited! My meeting with Pascal last week was great!
Hopefully on Thursday I will go with my two mentors Jake and Pascal to digitalize the logos that I made for Blue Revolution! I'm sooo excited about it :) Also Pascal and I will be working on shortening the power point presentation that Enrique Ramirez from FECOPT gave us, that way it's more precise and doesn't bore our audience.
Hope to hear more about the stickers soon!

6th grade forum

Well today I went to the 6th grade class from our school and talk to them about blue revolution and the importance of responsible fishing. I was very nervous and had been practicing what I was going to say for the entire weekend. But I feel really disappointed with myself. I made it interactive, I asked the kids questions and they were excited to answer them. And I also gave them a lot of facts for example I focused on three different species of fish: yellow fin tuna, red snapper and blue marlin. For each species I told them the age that they reach, the amount legs they lay, the amount of mercury they have, their size and whey they are fished. But I still feel unsatisfied. Even thought I manage to explain to them that middle age fish are the best to catch because the have already reproduce a couple of time and don't contain as much mercury, which was I topic I was strongly with and didn't know how to explain to others. I think that next time I need to connect more with my audience, have them feel that they are the teachers also and show more statics and facts from the power point that Enrique Ramirez from FECOP gave us.

The lesson of the day is that everyone learns form their experience and now that I have done two forums, one with help and the other one on my own, I have many ideas to improve. I'll hope that the next one is even better!

Next post will be about my meeting with my mentor Pascal on Wednesday! I hope we can catch up and I can tell him all the ideas that I have a show him the sketches from the two logos.

Bye for now :)

P.S. I will have the Spanish translation soon!

Paul Watson, Always defending the Ocean

Hello Everyone,

My weekly post is about an article that I read this weekend because: Paul Watson is person who wants to save the ocean and stop illegal fishing in the oceans around the world and because I don't like the the entire thready of Costa Rica with Japan.

The article is about an interview that Paul Watson gave to the costarican newspaper La Nación about the situation that has being going on since last year when the enviormentalist was arrest in Germany because he was called to court in Costa Rica for trespassing private property of a costarican boat that was illegally fishing in Guatemalan waters. Now he is afraid of coming to Costa Rica because the Japan court will  take him to Japan and never realise him because he has stopped many Japanese ship from killing big whales. Also he doesn't want to pay the costarican fishermen that he had the conflict with, 11 years ago, because he doesn't think that giving money to criminal is the right thing to do.

I shared this with my class in science yesterday and may of them didn't know anything about this, however something that grabbed my attention was that some people didn't think that Watson was a good person for the ways he used to stop the illegal fishing.
I have think he a good person for saving the oceans, but I don't like the ways that he uses to stop the fishermen. What's your opinion?

Below is his website, he also has as TV show that air in Animal Plant around the world about this journey and his crew's journey:

Below is the link to the article in Spanish but there is a small video on the left in English with Spanish subtitles.

What's New! ¡Lo Nuevo!

I'm working on the logo and sticker for Blue revolution! It's going well so far. I just need to add some color to the sketch. I'll probably have the finally sketch for both the spanish and English version by next week! Also I will be having my first forum from this year to the 6th grade class from La Paz School some time in the next couple of weeks. I'm so nervous and excited at the same time :)
