So the Beach clean up was very nice. The meeting point was at café el manglar, when I got there I was very nervous because I didn't know anybody. Then I met the owners of the place, some townspeople and other people that came with Marie to help out. The place was simple, but it had its own beauty. The tables and chairs where shiny as one of the men was polishing them with wood cleaner. It was small but welcoming and all the people there had a loving attitude. I was there before Marie and had a chance to know other people and they had the opportunity to meet me. But there was one lady I which I was with more. Her name was Yesenia. She told me that she really likes helping out the Brasilito town even if it's not her hometown, also she was in almost every committee from the town. It was a hard working morning and I have to admit that I was not ready for it because I got tired way to fast. We started like at 8:30am and finished like at11:40ish 3 hours picking up garbage is tiring!!! At around 10 I could only drag the garbage bag, but when I saw that older community members were working harder than I was I realized that I had no excuse to be tired.
The places that were the most dirty were near the houses, which surprised me because I would think that people would clean their e backyards (the beach) but no, it's all dirty! And there was very disturbing things that I found in the beach that I rather not mention. I was happy to make the town look pretty but also get to know another perspective of the town.
There are many different types of people in a town. No there are three people of people in my town, the ones who care and don't to anything, the ones who don't care and don't do anything about anything and the ones who want a change and make a change. I say this from my experience today, I'm not trying to be closed minded and categorize everybody in three groups, but like I said I'm saying this from what I learned today. This beach clean up was open to the community and only the family and friends of the people who were organizing it came and a few other towns people who are in some committees and want the town to look better. Something that really surprised me is that we passed by a lot of people and they just stared and didn't help. Yesenia ask one guy that he know why he wasn't helping out and he said that he was busy but he was just busy watching tv in his yard and he was still there when we came back. And then I asked myself doesn't he care about his community? But I'm nobody to judge that guy. Later that morning Yesenia and an older men of the community where talking about all the incredible plans that the committees had for the town but there were two problems: most of the town doesn't collaborate and second the plans would not get approved by the government. And I tell myself that its so selfish of the government because they won't pay anything to help the town in the first place and when the town is doing things on there own with donations and volunteer work the government doesn't support them. This reminds me of a conversation I had with Mr. Abel the other day, of what could I do to help the world. I see that the only way to help is to become part of the government of a big company and try to bring some sense to them to help out people and to stop being so selfish. I wish I was a person with power to help out the Brasilito community become pretty and successful. And there was something that really pissed me off. In Costa Rica the voting starts this month, for the districts and the smaller parts of government like mayors and all that stuff (I'm not really into politics because its very corrupted and superficial). Anyways these three guys of the government came to "support" the event today. At first my reaction was like okay that's cool they are interested in small communities, this is good.
And then I heard one of the older women complains and Yesenia told her to please behave around them and not complain. I was interested by her reaction. The younger one of them was around 20 maybe, no more then 25 and he was part of youth politics and that tomorrow people where voting. He didn't tell me much a out it just that they wanted to focus of teenager and making them good people for society for when they become adults. So what I understood was that the goal of the youth politics was to help teengers because they would accept help from. People their age other then adults. The youth politics is from the ages 18-35 years old. But after talking more I realized that the group is to prepare mini corrupted politics since they are 18 to have a controlled government. Or we'll at last that is how I see it because this guy (the youngest one) was most of the time on this phone sending emails and making calls to organize everything for the voting tomorrow and how he was going to all the forgotten little towns to make propaganda. The oldest man that came was nice, but he was a little robot, what I mean is that he had the politic talk and the voice of a policy form the capital and how he would defend the government when the towns people would mention how their projects wouldn't get approved. Overall it was nice that they came to support but I just didn't like their intentions.
Sow now my feet hurt of walking! Oh and what made my day was that we saw a few whales on the Beach right before we started the Beach clean up. I was just so amazing! I hadn't seen whales or dolphins out in the ocean in two years and I go to the ocean really often. And then I heard one of the older women complains and Yesenia told her to please behave around them and not complain. I was interested by her reaction. The younger one of them was around 20 maybe, no more then 25 and he was part of youth politics and that tomorrow people where voting. Then when I came home and after resting and doing my homework I work in the yearbook which takes a long of time and fries my brain because there are just all many things to get done in so little time!!! It's scary, but I just need to collect some more pictures and I will be done! So close yet so far! I will stop working on the yearbook for this week before I get tired of it.
Oh and I need to take some time to write to Pascal and see if we are doing something for the forum of the leather trust turtle thingy that is happening next Saturday. Wow I just realized its a week away meaning I need to contact him after this...´
Picture of the beach clean up!!!
Well that is all for now! Cool projects happening soon! :)

Wow! The beach cleanup sounds interesting. I can imagine that Brasilito really does need some help in that area. I am glad that you met some new people in the community and felt like you did something!
ReplyDeleteI was really interested in the political aspect of your day. I love politics in the USA but don't really understand the politics here. It seems like there is much corruption and apathy in this country so it is hard to get anything done! I was interested in your idea of working for a large company and getting them to change their minds about helping others. That is a good goal. Maybe you could run Coca Cola's sustainability projects for something along those lines. :)
Thank you very much for your post. It had emotion. Next time, just read it over for grammatical errors before posting. This one was difficult to read and understand at times.
Have a great week!
