My Plan

So in order to move on we have to answer a few question in class, which are the following:

What is my project?
My project is to create a scholarship fund so that at least one students goes to Creek Camp each year. I want to create this scholarship fund because it's a very unique experience for students to go. Also it's a great opportunity for La Paz to create connections with a science camp because they have a lot of connections and are able to get us many different cool science equipment.

What are my goals?
I want students to like science and learn that science is really fun and if you have more equipment than what we have in school it can be really cool. Also people need to start seeing science as something more than just experiment, because in reality it's way much more than that.

What do I need to do in the next 3 months? List the items and assigned dates due.

October:
I feel like I have a lot going on during this month and that I won't be able do many things because next week I have two big things going on. On Thursday yearbook is having the first fundraiser and that same day I'm going to Model United Nations for 3 days. Also this week is the beach social, but I wasn't able to coordinate anything with Witches Rock because it was short notice and Holly, was really busy because she is going to be out of the country until December.

This week is the 14th-20th and I will brainstorm of ideas of how to create a scholarship fund. Speak with Jim and see how he and Creek Connections can help me with the project. I spoke with Edgar, Martin and Mr. Abel and the fund is all set. I just have to put the money under the name of "Creek Camp" and pass a copy of vouchers and deposit so we can both keep a control.

21st-27th. I don't think I will do anything related to CAS. Maybe do the presentation in Morning Meeting on Tuesday. I need to see if I will do it with Selene or not. I will try to do it with her if she is ready but if she is not then I will present on my own. Ask Mr. Abel for list of emails of parents with business from La Paz.

28th-3rd I will start planning the first fundraiser. Do a raffle or a dinner night. I will send emails to parents of La Paz and community members and see if they want to donate a price. At the same time email parents how own business and speak with the to see if they wanted to collaborate and one night encourage and invite La Paz families to go to that restaurant or business and consume. Then a percentage will go to the scholarship. Do background research on raffles.

November:

4th-10th: Coordinate with Tanya where the second beach social will be and also see if there are any business around that beach to ask for a percentage. Help Tanya advertise the event a lot! Also plan the yearbook first fundraiser along with Jamie. If possible and I get an answer from a parent, hopefully have the dinner night of Saturday the 9th. If not I will have to wait for Saturday 18th at the beach social. I need to finish and perfect the flyer for the Beach Social which will go to on the newsletter.

11th-17th: If I wasn't able to get the dinner night the week before I will plan it so it will happen next week. I will do any last minute planning with the beach social fundraising aspect and advertise it A LOT! Also I will be busy with any last minute planning for the yearbook planning. Make sure that my team is involved and motivated. See how things are to see if it its feasible to do a raffle or not. I need to see if I get a good price. And if it did turn out than have it the week before the last of school.

18th -24th:  Plan the dinner, send out flyers and put them around campus. Also if something showed up for a raffle sell tickets, put flyers about it and tell people about. Work on advertisement for both fundraisers. Maybe to the raffle at the dinner. Depends on how things turn out.

25th- 1st: Count money, reflect on what went wrong and what went well. Brainstorm ideas on new fundraisers. Choose a student. Research on plane tickets.

Research 2 projects similar to your and cite references. Summary of what you learned.

One project that is in school, is the scholarship fund for the students. I was a part of Student Sponsoring students in 7th grade and then then 9th-10th grade. I learned a lot from it. For example if you want to earn more money you need to have everything donate. Planning a month ahead is the best, the less last minute problems you will have. Also learned how to ask help and donations from people which is really important. Having only one person dealing with the money is important and also keep a control with the person incharge at school (Jennifer and Edgar). Advertisement is one of the most fundamental aspect because people need to know about the event in order for them to show up and be able to contribute.

I found this article on how to start a scholarship fund which was very interesting some of the important point where:

  • Donations for scholarships are not charities because they don't go under the "charitable class".
  • Donations are not "tax deductible".
  • They are done to honor a loved one or price a group of people.
  • Most scholarships are made through nonprofit organization or any other type of local organizations.
  • They are usually manged and controlled by a third party.
  • Then there was another link to a very complicated criteria which scared me off, but I realized that it was for college type scholarships. However my project is small so it was interesting to read, but I don't need to follow all those steps.

It's on!

I have decided that I will create a scholarship fund so that at least 1 students goes to Creek Camp starting this year. Also Selene is doing something similar related to Creek Connection, but she will be in charge of the science aspect and keep up with the equipment that Jim and Will will bring. And in order for that to happen I need to plan a lot! My first idea is already starting and it's developing. I emailed Tanya Rauzi, she is in charge of the Community Council from the school to know more about the Beach Social which will be happening next Saturday. This beach social will be in Tamarindo in front of Witches' Rock and I email Holly, a former La Paz parent to see if they could give us a percentage of the profit that are gained that day. Now I'm just waiting for their response. And for now I will be creating a small flyer for the event and if I get a response from Holly I will add that information.
On similar topic I will be creating a power point about creek camp and all the fun that I had. I wanted to do it along will Selene, but her topic is different it's the science aspect, I was too show the fun and unique aspects of science camp. So I will  create the power point and then see if Selene wants to add anything to it. I want to do the presentation soon so people can have an idea of what creek camp is like and they will like to go.
Also Jim will be here this week and hopefully I will see him and I will coordinate with him the project and tell him my ideas.

CAS HOMEWORK:
Goals:
  • Create a connection with Creek Camp by sending a student to the camp each year.
  • Fundraise about 2,500 dollars for the student to go. The camp is $500 and the other money would be for plane ticket and depending when the ticket is bought it might be less, hopefully.
  • Give the scholarship to a top student from the 10th grade
Grantt Chart:
  1. October:
  • Meet up with Jim
  • Think of ways to fundraise
  • First fundraiser?
  • Presentation about camp
  1. November:
  • Speak with the treasure of the school to make sure a fund in the school for the scholarship. Nobody will touch this money. Also do the same thing for yearbook and make sure that the money that was left from last year is still under the yearbook fund. I want to make sure about this because there was a money disappearance in the music club.
  • Do second fundraiser a raffle
  • Speak will Miss Kellie and have candidates for the scholarship
  • Start planing a larger event for the second trimester a dinner, casino night, etc.
  1. December:
  • finish the last details of the big event
  1. January:
  • I will see how I'm doing on December and plan the rest. I need to plan more fundraiser, but the tickets and find a student who might be interested in doing the project for next year.
ON ANOTHER TOPIC!
THE YEARBOOK!!!
I wanted to talk a little bit about the yearbook because I have been experiencing many of the 8 learning outcomes and at the same time learning a lot.
So far it's going really great! I  have a good team and last week I have learn how to show that I was incharge. I didn't want this to happened but they left me no choice. My ideas was that yearbook club would be similar to Student Government, everyone listens and gives ideas in a friendly way and Andrea and I don't have to act like we have more power than everyone else because everyone contributes. However in yearbook we have a lot more people and they get distracted a lot. On Wednesday Camille brought books from her old school, which I approved because I tell everyone that they can bring yearbook to share ideas. But there were a few students who were being really distracted by the yearbooks and were being rude because they weren't pay attention to the planning that was being made, so I called their attention once. Then it happened again so I raised my voice and told them to put the book away, but they didn't. Then they were being loud and not contributing so I raised my voice a little more and told them to pay attention and put the books away now and to contribute and be respectful other ways they could leave. I said the last part very calm and relax and this worked because it should to them that I had more authority and that they had to be respectful, however I felt really bad because I felt that I was being a Miss Kenia. She was be a very good teacher but when you are being rude, you will see her bad side and I have the same thing, I'm very nice and calm but I hate it when people are being rude and I have a really strong attitude. I guess that I don't like to raise my voice and bring out my string attitude because I don't want it to be that way. I like to lead and have people respect me, but I have learned that I need to show everyone that I'm in charge and then when and not "loosen the leash" if I want everyone to do their work and behave. Also I'm just like most of them, maybe a year older than them and I don't want them to be like uhg she is so bossy, but after reflecting with Andrea about the last meeting I have come with the conclusion that I need to show my strong leader attitude to get a contribution from everyone and then as the year goes on and I see how they contribute I "loosen the leash" and hopefully it will become similar to the Student Government meetings.

Other fun facts about yearbook:
  • Nils loved the idea of doing the cover and he will work on it this weekend
  • The first fundraiser will be on Oct. 24th at the coffee house. The yearbook and music club will be together and will divide the profit.  I'm excited and nervous because I won't be there and I'm letting the club step up and do it on their own!
  • In November Nils will be working with a parent that knows about graphic design to do the cover!
  • The yearbook will cost about $5,360!!!!
  • More and More students are wanting to join and help with yearbook! :)
That is all for now! More updates along the week!
